Processing & Quality Control

Agro Fresh Global's spice processing facilities handle cleaning, sorting, grading, and rigorous quality control to meet international export standards.

From Raw Harvest to Export Grade

Raw spices arriving from our farming communities are not ready for export. They contain field debris, vary in moisture content, and need systematic classification before they can meet the specifications international buyers require.

Our processing facilities transform raw agricultural product into graded, tested, export-ready spices through a sequence of cleaning, sorting, grading, and quality verification stages.

Cleaning

The first processing step removes everything that is not the target spice.

  • Pre-cleaning -- Coarse screening to remove stones, sticks, large debris, and any non-spice material that arrived with the harvest
  • Air separation -- Lighter foreign matter (dust, husk fragments, insect debris) is removed through controlled airflow systems
  • Fine screening -- Calibrated mesh sieves separate material by size, removing undersized particles and broken pieces
  • De-stoning -- Gravity separation removes small stones and dense foreign objects that passed initial screening

For mace specifically, cleaning is particularly important because the delicate blade structure can trap debris between folds. Our process accounts for this with gentler handling and multiple passes.

Sorting

After cleaning, product is sorted by physical characteristics that determine its grade and value.

Mechanical Sorting

  • Size grading through calibrated screens (critical for nutmeg and clove classification)
  • Color sorting where applicable, separating product by visual consistency

Hand Sorting

Certain products, particularly mace, require manual sorting that machines cannot replicate. Trained sorters evaluate individual pieces for:

  • Color intensity and uniformity
  • Structural completeness (whole blades vs. broken pieces)
  • Visual defects (mold spots, discoloration, insect damage)

Hand sorting is labor-intensive but essential for achieving the premium grades that command higher market prices. It is one of the areas where our Indonesia-based processing provides a real cost advantage over sorting at destination.

Grading

Sorted product is classified into export grades according to international standards and buyer specifications.

Standards we grade against:

  • ASTA (American Spice Trade Association) quality parameters
  • ESA (European Spice Association) cleanliness specifications
  • Buyer-specific grade definitions for major accounts
  • Indonesian national export standards (SNI)

Each grade has defined parameters for moisture content, foreign matter limits, defect tolerances, and in some cases essential oil content or color values. Product that falls between grades is reclassified to the lower grade, never blended upward.

Moisture Conditioning

Moisture is the single most critical parameter for spice quality and shelf stability. Too high and the product develops mold and aflatoxin. Too low and it loses weight, aroma, and essential oil content.

  • Target ranges -- Typically 12-14% for mace and nutmeg, 12-13% for cloves
  • Method -- Controlled sun-drying or mechanical drying depending on weather and throughput requirements
  • Verification -- Moisture readings are taken at multiple points during conditioning using both rapid-test meters and calibrated oven methods

Quality Control

Quality control at Agro Fresh Global is not a final inspection gate. It is a system of checks that runs throughout the processing sequence.

In-Process Testing

At each processing stage, our QC team pulls samples and tests against the relevant parameters:

  • Post-cleaning -- Foreign matter content, to verify cleaning effectiveness
  • Post-sorting -- Defect ratios and size distribution, to confirm grade accuracy
  • Post-drying -- Moisture content, to ensure product is within specification

Laboratory Analysis

For parameters that cannot be assessed visually or with field instruments, we conduct laboratory testing:

  • Aflatoxin testing -- Critical for EU-bound shipments, which have among the world's strictest limits. We test at processing and again pre-shipment.
  • Essential oil content -- Particularly important for mace and cloves, where oil content directly indicates quality and value
  • Microbiological testing -- Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogen screening as required by destination market regulations
  • Pesticide residue analysis -- Ensuring compliance with MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) requirements

Pre-Shipment Inspection

Before any lot leaves for warehousing or direct export, a final comprehensive check confirms:

  • All grade specifications are met
  • Moisture content is within range
  • Documentation (lot numbers, origin data, test results) is complete and accurate
  • Packaging integrity and labeling correctness

Traceability Through Processing

Every lot that enters our processing facility carries its origin tag from collection. As the lot moves through each processing stage, we maintain this chain:

  • Origin village and farmer group
  • Collection date and initial field assessment
  • Each processing step with timestamps and operator records
  • All QC test results linked to the lot number
  • Final grade classification and warehouse allocation

This means any finished lot can be traced backward to the specific farming community and harvest period that produced it. For buyers with supply chain transparency requirements, this data is available on request.

Our processing and QC capability is what converts Indonesia's excellent raw materials into the consistent, specification-compliant product that global buyers need. It is the bridge between our sourcing network and our export operation.
